Plumber or Water Damage Company: Who Do You Call First?

Call whoever stops the water first. If the leak is still running and you cannot shut it off, call a plumber or a 24/7 water damage company that can send both. If the water is off but floors, walls or ceilings are wet, call a water damage company first, because drying has to start within 24 to 48 hours to stop mold.
A leak in your home is really two problems. One is the pipe, valve or appliance that is leaking. The other is all the water that already got out. A plumber fixes the first. A water damage company handles the second. Most people only think of one of them, and the order you call them in can change your bill by thousands of dollars.
This guide walks you through the first hour, from Tucson and Tempe to the high country. If you are standing in water right now, skip ahead to the checklist, or call us and we will tell you which crew you need.

A plumber repairs the source: the burst pipe, the cracked supply line, the failed water heater or the slab leak. A water damage company removes the water, measures moisture in walls and floors, sets up drying equipment and removes materials that cannot be saved. Plumbers do not dry houses, and most restoration crews do not repair pipes.
| Task | Plumber | Water damage company |
|---|---|---|
| Find and fix the leaking pipe or fixture | Yes | No (some can refer one) |
| Shut off water and isolate the line | Yes | Yes, at the main valve |
| Pump and vacuum standing water | No | Yes |
| Moisture readings in walls, floors and cabinets | No | Yes |
| Fans, dehumidifiers and drying logs | No | Yes |
| Cut out wet drywall, pad and insulation | Sometimes, only to reach a pipe | Yes |
| Photos and drying records for insurance | A repair invoice | Yes, full moisture log |
Who should you call first?
Ask one question: is water still coming out? If yes, the first goal is to stop it. Shut the main valve yourself if you can, then call a plumber. If the water is already off, or the leak was a one-time event like an overflow, call a water damage company first. The plumber can come later the same day.
Call a plumber first when:
- Water keeps spraying or running and you cannot find or turn the shut-off
- The leak is on the street side of your main valve, in the yard or at the meter
- You have no water at all after shutting the main and need it back
- A gas water heater is leaking and you smell gas (leave the house and call the gas company first)
Call a water damage company first when:
- The water is off, but carpet, baseboards or drywall are wet
- Water came through a ceiling from an attic line or an upstairs bathroom
- A toilet, washer or dishwasher overflowed and the source is already stopped
- Sewage or dirty runoff came into the house
- You do not know how far the water spread under floors or behind cabinets
Many restoration companies, including ours, can send a crew that shuts off and caps the line so drying can start, then line up a plumber for the repair. That one call is often the fastest path at 2 a.m.
What should you do in the first hour?
In the first hour, stop the water, make the area safe, record the damage and start removing water. Those four steps protect your family, your claim and your home. Do not wait for the plumber to finish before the drying starts. Every hour that water sits, it wicks higher into drywall and deeper into wood and slab.
- Shut off the water. Most Arizona homes have the main valve where the line enters the house, often near the garage or front hose bib. Our guide to the main water shut-off valve shows where to look.
- Turn off power to rooms with standing water at the breaker panel. Do not touch outlets or cords while standing in water.
- Take photos and video of the leak, the waterline on walls and anything damaged, before you move things.
- Move valuables, rugs and furniture off wet floors. Put foil or blocks under furniture legs that must stay.
- Make the calls: plumber for the source, water damage company for the drying, then your insurance company.
Why does the order matter so much?
The order matters because water damage grows with time, while the plumbing repair usually does not. A plumber can fix a pipe today or tomorrow for about the same price. Wet drywall and subfloor left for two days often turn a drying job into a tear-out job with mold work added. Arizona's dry air helps, but it does not dry the inside of a wall.
Here is how the cost can climb, using the approximate ranges from our cost table:
| Situation | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Water extracted the same day, little soaked in | $500 – $1,500 |
| Drying and dehumidifying for 3–5 days | $1,000 – $3,500 |
| Burst pipe with drywall removal and repair | $1,500 – $5,000 |
| Slab leak water damage | $2,000 – $6,000 |
| Mold removal added after a slow start | $1,500 – $4,000 |
The plumbing repair is a separate bill from the plumber. Ask both for a written estimate before work starts.
Which leaks need both trades the same day?
Burst pipes, slab leaks, water heater failures and attic line breaks almost always need both trades on the same day. The plumber has to reach the pipe, and that often means opening a wall, ceiling or floor that the restoration crew will be drying anyway. When both talk to each other, the cuts are made once and in the right place.
- Burst pipe in a wall or ceiling: the plumber needs an opening, and the drying crew needs the wet drywall out. Our burst pipe water damage cleanup service plans both.
- Slab leak: a leak detection company or plumber finds it, then the flooring over it is lifted and dried. See slab leak signs.
- Water heater in a garage or closet: the tank is replaced, and the wall and floor around it are dried.
- Supply line under a sink: a cheap part, but cabinets and toe kicks hold water for days.
How fast can help arrive?
A 24/7 water damage company can usually reach most homes in the Phoenix and Tucson areas within about 60 to 90 minutes, day or night. Rural and mountain towns take longer. Many plumbers also run 24/7, but some only book next-day visits for non-emergencies. Ask for an arrival window on the phone.
We send crews across the state. In the East Valley, that includes water damage repair in Tempe for apartments, condos and older ranch homes near ASU. In the high country, our show low arizona water damage page covers frozen pipes and snowmelt. Payson homes hit by storms can read our guide on flood damage restoration payson homeowners face after monsoon rain.
When water is already on the floor, start with emergency water extraction arizona homeowners can book any hour. Extraction alone often keeps a $1,000 job from becoming a $5,000 one.
What should you tell each company on the phone?
Give each company the same short facts: where the water came from, whether it is still running, how many rooms are wet, how long ago it started and whether the water is clean or dirty. That lets the plumber bring the right parts and the restoration crew bring enough equipment on the first trip.
- Your address and the best number to reach you
- The source, if you know it (pipe, water heater, toilet, roof)
- Whether the main valve is off
- Rooms and floor types affected (carpet, tile, wood, vinyl plank)
- Whether water reached ceilings, cabinets or the floor below
- Your insurance company, if you plan to file a claim

Should I call a plumber or a water damage company first?
Call whoever stops the water first. If the leak is still running and you cannot shut it off, call a plumber or a 24/7 restoration company that can cap the line. If the water is already off but floors or walls are wet, call a water damage company first so drying starts within 24 to 48 hours.
Can a plumber dry out my house after a leak?
Usually not. Plumbers fix pipes and fixtures. They do not carry commercial dehumidifiers, air movers or moisture meters, and they do not keep drying records for insurance. A water damage company handles that part.
Does a water damage company fix the leaking pipe?
Most do not repair plumbing. A good crew will shut off and isolate the line so drying can start, and many can bring in a plumber for the repair the same day.
Will insurance pay for both the plumber and the restoration?
It depends on your policy. Many Arizona policies cover sudden water damage, such as a burst pipe, but not the cost to repair the worn-out pipe itself. Ask your agent and keep both invoices.
How much does it cost if I wait a day to start drying?
Waiting can move a job from simple extraction, about $500 to $1,500, into drying plus drywall repair, about $1,500 to $5,000, and mold removal can add about $1,500 to $4,000.
