Can Water-Damaged Furniture Be Saved? What to Keep and Toss

Solid wood and metal furniture can often be saved after a clean-water leak if it is dried slowly within 24 to 48 hours. Upholstered pieces can sometimes be saved after clean water but usually not after sewage or floodwater. Mattresses, particleboard and pressed-wood pieces that swell are usually not worth saving. Water category and drying speed decide most cases.
When water hits a room, furniture is often the last thing people think about and the first thing that starts to warp. Arizona's dry air helps furniture dry, but it can also dry wood too fast and crack it. The goal is to sort quickly, move what can be saved and dry it the right way.
If the water is still on the floor, call our emergency water extraction arizona crew first. Pulling the water out of the room protects everything in it.

Why does the type of water matter?
Clean water from a supply line or water heater carries few germs. Gray water from a dishwasher or washer carries some. Black water from sewage or outdoor flooding carries bacteria that soak into fabric and foam. Our guide to clean, gray and black water explains the three categories. Soft furniture that touched black water should be thrown out.
How do you dry wood furniture safely?
- Move it off wet floors to a dry room. Put foil or plastic under the legs.
- Remove drawers and cushions and open doors so air reaches every surface.
- Wipe off water and any mud with a soft cloth.
- Dry slowly indoors with the AC and a fan on low. Avoid direct Arizona sun, which cracks and warps wood.
- Watch for white haze on the finish. It often fades as the wood dries.
- Wait before refinishing. Give solid wood a week or two to settle.
What about upholstered pieces?
Pull off removable cushion covers and stand cushions on edge to dry. If a sofa sat in clean water for less than a day, a professional upholstery cleaner may save it. If it smells musty after a few days, or the water was dirty, the foam is likely contaminated. Mold can start in 24 to 48 hours, as our mold timeline guide explains.
Does insurance pay for damaged furniture?
If the water damage itself is covered, damaged contents often are too, under the personal property part of the policy. Take photos of each item before you throw anything out, write down brands and ages, and keep a small sample of fabric. Our guide on documenting water damage for insurance has a checklist.
Restoration crews in Phoenix, Mesa, Tucson and show low arizona water damage jobs often move and block furniture as part of the drying job, which saves more pieces than waiting.
